What is the Mindful Media Retreat?
The Mindful Media Retreat at Karmê Chöling is an immersive 3-day weekend program designed specifically for teens and young adults (ages 15–19). In today’s hyper-connected world, young people face constant media bombardment across school, work, and personal lives. This retreat provides a supportive space to contemplate about how we as individuals approach the media in our lives. Whether through digital or analog, it is important to understand how the media we choose to both consume and create impacts communities local and abroad.
Core Themes & Curriculum
- Don’t Detach, Approach with Mindfulness: Screens are a part of modern day life whether we want them to be or not. Learning how to approach media is the first step to letting go of the control it has over our lives.
- The Journey of Siddhartha: The story of Siddhartha starts with him choosing to leave his comfortable cushions to find true meaning. Just as he travelled the world and discovered his own truth, we will explore participants' personal stories and how they find their truth surrounded by others’ narratives.
- Community Connection: Discussing individual identity and exploring how our own media impacts us and our communities.
Who Leads the Program?
The retreat is taught by Mark Bacon (age 26) and Gabe Taney (age 29), experienced instructors of Karmê Chöling’s Rites of Earth Warriorship program. Having grown up in Shambhala and Zen communities while navigating an increasingly complex technological landscape, Mark and Gabe uniquely understand the digital pressures facing today’s youth.
Who is This Retreat For?
- Age Group: Young adults ages 15 to 19 bridging into adulthood, finding their footing, and defining their personal contribution to their local communities.

Instructors

After going through the Rites of Passage program in 2008, Mark Bacon grew up attending Family Camp at Karme Choling nearly every summer since. He has practiced at local Zen centers during his time in New York and Seattle, and now teaches the Rites of Earth Warriorship program (2025-) at Karme Choling's Family Camp, as well as leading their Leadership Core. He's currently based in Seattle working as a software engineer by trade, and pursuing the arts and game design outside of his day job.

Growing up 15 minutes from Karme Choling, it has always been a special place in Gabe's life. Starting Family camp as a tiny tigger, he has been to many places but always returned to where he feels most at home. He has attended over 2 decades worth of family camps as well as attending Sun camp and their Rights of Warriorship program. Currently, he is teaching The Rites of Earth warriorship program for Family Camp offered for teens 16-18 and has recently been part of the staff wellness team, supporting and helping new and longtime staff during the execution of their programs. He is currently in Longmont CO, working at CU Boulder in the facilities department.

Ophelia Pond has been attending Family Camp since she was three years old. Over two decades later, she has taken on the role of camp coordinator, while also leading community inclusion initiatives. Most recently she taught a camp-wide program about disability awareness. Ophelia sees Karmê Chöling as her home, and she appreciates any opportunity to be on the land and support the community. She currently lives in Ottawa, Canada where she is studying film production.
