Exploring Meditation & The Four Noble Truths

Why do we meditate? People come to meditation for many reasons, but often it begins with a simple desire—to find some relief from the constant noise of daily life, to slow down, and to meet challenges with greater clarity and ease. Some might even say they come to meditation to alleviate the deeper suffering that can be part of being human.

According to the Buddha we do suffer. The uneasiness we experience as human beings comes from a basic misunderstanding about the nature of reality. Meditation gives us a way to look more closely at our experience and gradually see through that confusion. As the mind settles, we begin to recognize a deeper clarity and stability that has been there all along. To support this process, portions of the retreat will be held in silence, creating a spacious and supportive environment for the mind and heart to truly rest.

Throughout the weekend, we will also explore the foundational Buddhist teaching of the Four Noble Truths. These teachings point directly to the human experience: why suffering arises, where it comes from, the possibility of freedom from it, and the path that leads toward that freedom.

Join us for a weekend of meditation practice and teachings on the heart of basic Buddhism, set amidst the emerging beauty of May in Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom. It is an opportunity to step away from the busyness of everyday life, reconnect with your own natural clarity, and return home with a deeper sense of steadiness and confidence that can continue to support you long after the retreat ends.
