Silent Simplicity: A Meditation Retreat

Buddhist Retreats Vermont Main Shrine Room

A simple silent meditation retreat

Delight in the magic of fall at Karmê Chöling and embrace relaxation and wakefulness in the beautiful Autumn Colored foothills of Northern Vermont.

This retreat is an opportunity to settle in — to let your mind rest and recover from the demands of the busyness and expectations we all place on ourselves. Allow time to slow down, and check in with yourself and your thoughts.

During this program we will create a warm and inviting atmosphere through simple mindful meditation practice, contemplations and the camaraderie of each other. Here you can:

  • Step out of your usual patterns of daily life
  • Slow down
  • Relax your mind and become fully present
  • Look inward, gently coming to know yourself more fully

Let yourself settle and heal in the vivid colors of Autumn. Find solice in time taken for yourself and cultivate resilience for the life you'll return home to!

Great for friends, couples, or individuals.

Attendance & Price

Joining All Sessions or Just a Few

You may join all of the sessions for the weekend or just a few. There is much benefit in being able to do the whole retreat, sinking deeply into meditation even for a couple of days. But the schedule (or your body) may prevent you from being able to do the whole weekend.

The Full weekend has three Main Sessions plus several partial sessions:

  • Saturday Morning Session
  • Saturday Afternoon Session
  • Sunday Morning Session
  • Smaller sessions are Friday night, early Saturday morning, late Saturday evening, and early Sunday morning.

Partial attendance is based on the number of Main Sessions you attend. There are two partial attendance options:

  • $110 - For two of the Main Sessions
  • $60 - For one of the Main Sessions

You'll need to contact our Front Desk in order to register and make arrangements for either of these partial attendance options at: info@karmecholing.org

Note: A 50% deposit is required to reserve your accommodation.

Instructor

Mark Bowen

Mark Bowen first encountered Zen Buddhism as a high school student in the late sixties and had his first run-in with the genius of Chögyam Trungpa in the mid-seventies through the book Cutting Through Spiritual Materialism. But he must be a slow learner, for it took him another twenty years finally to settle down and start meditating. The catalyst was a 1996 expedition to Sikkim, India, with the legendary and deeply spiritual British mountaineer, Doug Scott. Soaking in the atmosphere of that formerly Buddhist kingdom and visiting Rumtek monastery, the seat of Trungpa’s Kagyu lineage, turned his mind from study to practice. He connected with the Boston Shambhala Center shortly after his return and although he still considers himself a student, has been teaching in various capacities since 2003. Presently, his primary interest is Mahamudra, which seems quite applicable to silent retreats such as this one.

Mark holds a doctorate in physics from MIT. For about twelve years after graduate school, he worked in the medical device and pharmaceutical industries, and then left all that behind to become a writer. He has written three books of narrative non-fiction, the first two about global warming and the third about a crazy telescope buried deep in the ice at the South Pole. He lives near Karmê Chöling with his partner Wendy Stein.
