Intermediate Kyudo

2026

Kyudo Azuchi

Continue your study of the Way of the Bow in this intermediate program at Karmê Chöling's Seiko Kyudojo. This retreat is open to all who have completed First Shot and offers an opportunity to deepen your practice in a focused group setting.

Kyudo is one of the oldest contemplative arts of the Japanese tradition, meditation in action, where the aim is not the target but the synchronization of awareness and body in the present moment.

One is not polishing one's shooting style or technique, but the mind.

Shibata Sensei

Building on the foundation of the Seven Coordinations, this program introduces two new dimensions of practice. The first is hitote, the two-arrow style, in which the practitioner shoots a pair of arrows in succession and works with the continuity and rhythm of the form. The second is sukobai, the kneeling form, which brings a different quality of grounding and presence to the shot.

Alongside this technical training, Sensei Jack will encourage practitioners to refine the breath until it becomes genuinely meditative, and to work with greater precision in every detail of the form. Evenings will include talks that place the practice within its broader contemplative context.

All necessary class equipment will be provided.
