The Japanese style Rock Garden at Karme Choling Meditation Retreat Center

The Rock Garden

The Rock Garden at Karmê Chöling was conceived and designed by Chögyam Trungpa and Matt DiRodio in 1978. Going off sketches on notebook paper by the Vidyadhara and his vision for the garden "manifesting the principles of heaven, earth and man, like calligraphy and flower arrangement", Matt did the installation in 1979. (Read his description of the process in "The Karmê Chöling Rock Garden")

Situated just off the Main Shrine Room in a protected courtyard, The Rock Garden has many moods and faces, depending on the seasons, visitors – both human and animal, and how the gravel was raked. As simple as it is, it is always different and changing.
