Bodhichitta - Awakened Mind and Heart

The development of compassion and lovingkindness is central to our journey along the Buddhist path of awakening.

As is said in "The Way of the Bodhisattva":

"All the happiness there is in this world comes from thinking about others,
and all the suffering comes from preoccupation with yourself." (Shantideva)

Among the most celebrated and profound teachings of the whole tradition of Buddhism are those that discuss bodhichitta - awakened mind and heart.

Tonglen Meditation

The practice of Tonglen - otherwise known as sending and taking - is one of the most celebrated practices of Mahayana Buddhism. Through engaging in this practice we learn to disempower a deep habitual tendency that keeps us stuck in the cycle of suffering: avoiding what we do not like, and grasping onto what we do like. Rather than try to push away everything we find unpleasant and cling to everything we like, tonglen teaches us to have a more courageous view.

Compassion Practice

Developed as the central practice to accompany the lojong mind training slogans, tonglen harnesses the energy that usually keeps us stuck and relates to it in a way that supports our path of awakening. Rather than fixate on our own challenges and obstacles - thereby narrowing our mind - we use our difficulties to open our heart and mind to the difficulties that all beings face. Through this practice we realize more and more that all other beings are just like us. Through this insight we develop the courage required to let go of our own self-centeredness and unlock our capacity to genuinely wish and act for the well-being of others.

We are grateful and delighted that Changling Rinpoche has agreed to teach us on this subject. Please join us in receiving these teachings on awakening bodhichitta through the practice of tonglen. We would love to see you there!

Join us on Saturday, September 23rd at 8:00am EST over zoom as Changling Rinpoche introduces us to the practice of tonglen meditation.
