Kyudo Practice Weekend, Beginner's and Intermediate Archery Program

September 13 - 15, 2013

Kyudo, the Way of the Bow, is one of the oldest arts of the Japanese tradition of contemplative warriorship. It is meditation in action. The aim is not the target, but synchronization of awareness and body in the present moment.
The idea of the Practice Weekend is for kyudo practitioners in the area and beyond to come together in practice with each other and to celebrate our shared journey. The program offers an environment in which beginning and experienced students can advance their practice together. The key is open-hearted participation.

To begin the study of Kyudo, students are required to take First Shot instruction. This will provide training in Kyudo’s Seven Coordinations, shichi-do, the basic form for aligning the body and properly releasing the arrow. This precise form offers the student the opportunity to clean away obstacles to see the mind and qualities of the heart more clearly.
Beginners will work directly with students of Shibata Sensei Kanjuro XX, 20th-generation master bowmaker and archer and the third-generation bowmaker to the Emperor of Japan.  First Shot is Saturday morning and is a pre-requisite to attend the rest of the weekend.

All levels of practitioners welcome, regardless of age, gender, or physical strength. Teens are welcome, and children should be at least 8 years of age. All necessary equipment will be provided. Please bring comfortable clothing. Offerings of generosity towards our Azuchi Fund are welcome.  The program will begin at 7:30 Friday evening and end Sunday afternoon at approximately 4pm.

Note that it is not necessary to register for the entire duration to attend, students may register for a single day of attendance or multiple days.

"Through Kyudo one can learn to live beyond hope and fear, how to be."  – Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche

"One is not polishing one's shooting style or technique, but the mind."
