Karmê Chöling Residency

As a Karmê Chöling resident, you will live, practice and grow in a Shambhala household held by beautiful land and experienced dharma teachers. This will allow you to weave meditation and Shambhala Buddhist principles more deeply into your daily life. Our summer residencies are perfect for telecommuters, students, families, retirees or anyone who could be here for a month or longer.

What Karmê Chöling Residency Offers:

Our community is based on respect and caring for one another, acknowledging that each person’s engagement with the path is beneficial to many beings.  As a part of our Residency program, you will have access to: 

1. Study & Practice Support

  • Daily group meditation in an environment crafted to support practice, including 4 shrine rooms. 
  • Personalized meditation instruction. 
  • Access to our rich Buddhist library and KCL archive
  • Profound Dharma programs led by experienced teachers.
    Karmê Chöling programs are FREE for Residents! 
  • Access to solitary retreat cabins for (qualified practitioners. Additional costs apply)*
  • Opportunities to join Kyudo (Japanese Archery) practice for those with previous training. (Introductory Kyudo First Shot program is tentatively planned for early August) 

2. Community & Quality of Life

  • Three delicious meals a day. 
  • P5 hiking trails on over 750 acres of beautiful New England forest.
  • Regular community events and Shambhala Buddhist celebrations.
  • Opportunities to volunteer in our organic garden

3. For Telecommuters: 

  • Access to strong wifi, printer/copier and other amenities to fully support work-from-home needs 
  • Access to a Zoom/sound recording studio, by appointment
  • Optional private and shared office spaces (additional fees apply)

Life at Karmê Chöling

You will participate in morning and evening practice with the rest of the community, share meals with your housemates, and attend optional study groups and classes. Community life will let you experience the challenge and richness of sharing your life and space with others, sharing chores, meals, and communal spaces. 

1. Our Daily Schedule:
Breakfast: 8 a.m.
Morning Practice session: 9 – 10:15 a.m.
Lunch: 12:30 p.m.
Evening Practice session: 5:30 – 6:30 p.m
Dinner: 6:30 p.m.
Possible Evening class or event: 7:30 p.m.

2. Accommodations:

Each resident has a private room with shared bathrooms. We also have enhanced accommodations with a private bathroom, larger rooms, or even a private three-bedroom home. 

 

Karmê Chöling has set up office space, both shared and private, for residents to further their projects, work remotely, and enjoy exertion.

 


3. Community Engagement

Karmê Chöling residents have a diverse range of perspectives. We are unified in the practice of sitting meditation and creating a kind and sane community. 

All residents are asked to participate in the following:

  • Meditation practice: Attend at least 4  sessions per week
  • Household/dish chores (ROTA): Engage in 5 sessions per week
  • Community Meetings: Participate in 1 biweekly meeting per month 
  • Culture of mutual respect and kindness: This makes Karmê Chöling an inclusive place for everyone who wishes to study the dharma and live in a community centered on mindfulness. 

4. The Land:

 

As a Karmê Chöling Resident, the land is a great resource for rejuvenation, adventure, and good health.  With so much space — more than  700 acres — you’ll have ample opportunity to explore the sacred forest and fields.

$300 ($50/person for each additional) This fee covers setup/organizing of the overall residency.

Please submit your Residency application minimally, at least four weeks before you expect to move in.
