2019 Fundraising Campaign

Over the last twelve months, Karmê Chöling has seen a dramatic decline in program registrations. Because of that, we’ve had to cancel more programs than ever and take a loss with many others.

To keep Karmê Chöling afloat since June 2018, we have tightened our belt with considerable expense reductions and, starting this year, we will be going to a seasonal model to reduce staff expense for the period of November through April – Winter Session.

Even with reductions in expenses, to sustain Karmê Chöling – the Jewel of the Shambhala Mandala – through the Winter Session, we need to raise $250,000.

This makes your donation to Karmê Chöling
all the more important and relevant, right now.

The Math

Here are the numbers we’re working with. These funds are needed for the basic operation of Karmê Chöling May 1, 2019 through April 30, 2020:

$1,054,000 – expected total operating expenses

-$540,000 – projected future program revenue (5/1/19 – 10/31/19)

-$124,000projected future monthly donations

$390,000 – projected deficit

-$140,000 – repurposed Capital Campaign donations

$250,000 – Fundraising Appeal Goal

2019 Fundraising Appeal

To reach the broader Karmê Chöling family for help, we have designed a major fundraising appeal, called COMING HOME, which will consist of a number of emails starting June 3rd through October 1. This series of emails will weave the story of Trungpa Rinpoche’s epic struggle that brought the dharma to America together with Karmê Chöling’s commitment and efforts to protect and perpetuate it over the years.

Embedded in our appeal will be creative ways to give and, if you can’t give yourself, ways to involve friends and family to help sustain this place we all call home.

Donations to Karmê Chöling are tax-deductible. Please consider making an unrestricted one-time donation today or becoming a monthly donor to provide ongoing support. We simply ask that contributors give as generously as they can.

If you’re already a monthly donor, we ask that you seriously consider increasing your contribution. No matter what, we greatly appreciate whatever contributions your individual circumstances permit.

By working together, we can sustain Karmê Chöling through the Winter Session to enjoy its 50th anniversary next year and for future generations of practitioners.

We can do this!

Making the Best of a Challenging Situation

This is a time of transition for Karmê Chöling and for Shambhala – another bead on the mala of constant change – a serious one.

As Shambhala looks inward toward what to accept and what to reject, Karmê Chöling – on its own merit – continues to do everything in its power to provide a safe, welcoming, and inclusive place for everyone who comes through our doors while, at the same time, being an example to the greater mandala in doing so so.

Here are just a few things that we do to eliminate the possibility of harm happening at Karmê Chöling:

  • We updated within the last eleven months, and are updating once again, our code of ethics to continue to ensure a safe and sane environment for Karmê Chöling residents, program participants, program staff, visitors, and those on in-house retreats. Look for those to go up on our website for your review.
  • We have rolled out mandatory inclusivity training for all Karmê Chöling residents to open awareness & acceptance of everyone’s differences while creating an even more caring and welcoming environment for all our guests.
  • We, as Karmê Chöling residents empower each other as well as everyone else who comes through Karmê Chöling to maintain awareness of how others are being treated and feel safe in speaking up with kindness when things seem not right.

Since July of last year, we’ve seen long-time students renew their commitment to living the dharma and practicing. We’ve also seen first-time students totally connect with the dharma and practice and voice excitement over continuing on the path.

Karmê Chöling remains committed to protecting & perpetuating the Shambhala teachings and precious Buddha Dharma that were brought to us by the Vidyadhara and carried on by the Sakyong while, at the same time, acting as an example to the Shambhala mandala in providing a safe, welcoming, and inclusive place for everyone.

If you would like to share your thoughts on how Karmê Chöling could serve people better, we want to hear! We also need your help to sustain Karmê Chöling!

A Positive Trend We’re Seeing

Since July of 2018, while we’ve seen a 50% reduction in registrations, we’ve also seen the return of long-time practitioners and an excited new generation of practitioners coming through. This new generation of practitioners get it – they connect with the dharma and understand the impact of practice – and want to go back home to find a Shambhala Center near them.

This trend lifts our hearts and instills optimism that things will turn around for Karmê Chöling in the near future. We just need get through this latest time of transition.
